Sheer clothing is inescapable this season. From the spring/summer 2024 runways of Saint Laurent, Gucci and Valentino, in street style snaps capturing Hunter Schafer, Greta Lee or Emily Ratajkowski, and on the red carpet via Bella Hadid and Zendaya, the message is clear: sheer is supreme. It signals that people are ready to have some fun with fashion, and lean into our hedonistic impulses when it comes to choosing our aesthetic for the season ahead.

And it’s no wonder when it looks so good. There’s an overwhelming sense of confidence that emanates from the people who dare to bare (kind of) which taps into the appeal of the sheer trend: what makes it intimidating, makes it empowering.

But us mere mortals aren’t models, so can you wear it without feeling naked or out of place in everyday life? According to InStyle Fashion Editor Annie Doig, the answer is yes. Doig says the key to wearing sheer is playing with transparency and texture. “You don’t have to go all-in on the sheer trend to be able to wear it well,” she explains. “Maybe you opt for a dress that has a lot of ruching and draping, covering the skin but hinting at what’s underneath. You can also wear a sheer item as a statement piece in the outfit. You could go for a sheer top under a leather jacket with jeans, or a sheer dress with carefully-chosen undergarments to make you feel put together and not totally on-show.”
